The strange world of Music Entertainment

This Friday the lead single off my debut album releases to the world! “Woman Being” will be available everywhere for streaming! 😱

As an independent artist and musician I’ve been learning a lot about the way money works in the industry. I listen to a lot of podcasts. The two most helpful to me have been CD Baby’s DIY Music Podcast and Ari Herstand’s New Music Business Podcast. This isn’t the first time i’ve released music, but it’s the first time i’ve been responsible for releasing music solely and with full creative control.

I’m an artist that recognizes a lot of the music I make and produce wishes to have a broad audience but I know that what I do isn’t for everyone. My message isn’t controversial: love yourself, love others. But most music isn’t so forward-facing with its societal goal as mine. The goal of most music is typically commercial: make as much money from as many folks as possible. There isn’t much thought given to connection, or even the affect that it makes on an audience. At most, this thought is secondary, and it makes sense why: you can’t make more music if you don’t make money off the music in the first place.

“Woman Being” will be available for streaming, but I’m not sure that streaming is the ideal way to connect or listen to my music. It’s absolutely not the way in which I will make the most money, but I don’t even know that it will be a place where I will reach the broadest audience.

When I think about a likely Reverend Doctor fan, they’re someone that does still occasionally listen to broadcast radio, or at the very least, internet radio. They go to community meetings, are active in the PTA, have social media, but don’t put much stock in it. This person isn’t very deep into Spotify playlists or maybe doesn’t even have a music subscription. I could be wrong, but it just means that the streaming model is not a place that I will see growth or “fan capture”.

So I think a lot about the other places my people might be and how we’ll find each other. PTA meetings are hardly the place to invite others to a show or to hand out an album to say “check out my band”.

This is a long way of saying that if you’re reading this and the music and message is important to you, think of other people in your life that would connect with my music and message and tell them so. We’ll never find each other if we don’t think of new ways to connect. If you have an idea, send me a message at info@reverenddoctormusic.com or even comment below.

For now, i’ll use the industry’s way of connecting and promoting, but i’m well aware that to find my people I think the spaces will be built by hand with imagination.

Thanks for reading!
